Mick Jenkins – The Water[s]
Water’s more important than the gold.
If you have not yet heard Mick Jenkins, here is your glass. His second release since last year’s Trees and Truths mixtape caught me. I let this one marinate for over a week and there are still too many words that come to mind for me to comfortably summarize its importance. I will express that Mick Jenkins has managed to draw the attention of many while seeming to appear out of space with a theme of what we need more of. That is the beauty of his latest labor of love, The Waters! It is smart and so necessary while being full of blissful vibes. Much of the production has a fitting etherealness to it. There is probably some technical term for what I mean, but for me it’s just a beautiful abstract blend of ambient sounds behind the beats that makes us feel like we are adrift while listening. Some favorited from this project are Shipwrecked and Healer, the second (unsurprisingly) produced by Dream Koala. Besides the production, Mick Jenkins has several seemingly effortless moments of striking with a rich flow of words like some quick and graceful juggler of the sort. Please take this in for yourself and enjoy!
