    Clayt – Third Eye Visual

Clayt is a Virginia native who was inclined to sports growing up, then fell in love with the art of words and rhyme. As he discovered his ability to write his own lyrics telling his perspective, he realized and made his mission to spread positive messages through his lyrical gift. He hopes to “inspire others to believe in themselves, and focus on the highs rather than the lows.” Making it clear that he’s more than a rapper, he want to help establish art culture in Virginia that he felt was missing in his youth. You can feel the strength of his passion with one listen to his single Third Eye,…

The Underachievers – Chasing Faith x Rain Dance x Allusions Visual

In preparation for their new album, Evermore: The Art of Duality, The Underachievers released a desert/Vegas themed visual. The cinematic trip of a music video features three songs from the album, including Chasing Faith, Rain Dance, and Allusions. It might remind of a certain Johnny Depp film, Fear And Loathing. Issa Gold regularly reiterates that his intention with music is to speak to those who break the mold and might feel like outsiders and/or depressed and unite the generation. He’s stated, via twitter, that he only raps because it’s the greatest platform to spread his message. Chasing Faith, in particular, grabs attention with those themes and happens to be my…

Plewto Smith – Night On Edgewood & Freckled Girl Visual

I challenge you to play this song, without dancing within the first minute or singing along by the end. Plewto Smith’s Night On Edgewood is made for getting us up and moving, or at least bobbing our heads enthusiastically as we watch everyone else from the sidelines. I recommend having this on your end of the summer playlists! The rapper-turned-singer also released a video for Freckled Girl, from his EP #PUSSY. He is doing episodes of promo in order to assist him with expenses of a Chance The Rapper feature. The video for that might make you laugh, a lot. Show some support for local artists! I think Plewto Smith…

Since the artfully conscious play that is 2 Cents was released last year, we have heard a powerfully reflective song by Val DaGrain called Truth Hurts. BLKSUNCHILD – Low Off The Hii EP (+Download)

The Low Off The Hii EP is a must-listen which was released by the artist who goes by the name Blksunchild. This album features some superb lyricism. I was immediately impressed when I came across it. Blksunchild is a multi-faceted artist who also creates beautiful original sketches and paintings. I have found myself attentive when listening to each song on this gem. I played it several times after my first listen, only to catch more of his lines. Take in the sounds for yourself and also support Blksunchild’s art and his other music through the links I’ve gathered. Included is the mini-story for a new favorite of mine, Vice City…

Tiron & Ayomari – The Great New Wonderful LP (+Visual)

Tiron & Ayomari are doing something really cool with their new album, The Great New Wonderful, one I’ve anticipated since following The Wonderful Prelude parts 1 & 2. I believe these are necessary artists that have come about time because of the enlightening messages they so thoughtfully incorporate into each their projects. I deeply appreciate many of the ideas being explored and questioned throughout this one, including self identity, love, comfort zones, and change -to name a few. It is refreshing to have music to go to which reminds of the good things you are, and of your potential when you feel hopeless and paralyzed by events of life, while…

    Plewto Smith – #PUSSY EP & More

#PUSSY (Pure Urban Sensual Satisfying Youngin) is a clever work by the artist known as Plewto Smith. The Atlanta-based former-rapper recently created this smooth vocal project. Throughout #PUSSY, he shows his gift as a singer, blending soul, trap, and electronic styles throughout the eight-song mixtape. I am most impressed by the approach he took to blending classic r&b harmonies with more eclectic production. He states that he hopes to spread the message of individuality and love, which is forever embraced here on The Frolic. My favorite songs thus far are Freckle Girl, the wonderfully vulnerable You Don’t Know Me (Freckle-logue), and She-Real. Another song I love from this mixtape is…

Dumplings én China – Wishbone Visual

Dumplings En China is one of my favorite new and true artists to have come into in 2014. Throughout the year, he has made two outstanding EPs available, along with some uplifting jams which I continue to play to brighten my days. When you listen to them all back to back, it is not difficult to imagine why he has already been courted by Indie record labels both inside and outside of the U.S. His rare and bold approach to each of his songs is what gets me stirring whenever I find myself pressing play on something new from him. I don’t quite know what to expect each time, and…

Lion Babe – Jungle Lady Visual

After two teasing years, the first official Lion Babe EP has arrived, and it delivers a refreshing helping of new school funk music. The only disappointing thing about this project is that it leaves you wanting more. I think this very special duo picked a fitting time of the year to officially introduce themselves to the world, with all of the other amazing music that is being released lately, from D’Angelo’s Black Messiah to J.Cole’s recent release. The self-titled project includes the future classic (I feel), Treat Me Like Fire, as well as other favorites I have featured previously, Jump Hi featuring Childish Gambino and Intro. With the five track…
